The movie is a coming-of-age story set in rural New Mexico during WW II\, centering on the spiritual education of a young boy\, Antonio Márez. His worldview is shaped by the arrival of Ultima\, a traditional curandera\, or healer\, who comes to live with his family. Márez faces conflict with his traditional spirituality and Catholicism.
